The New Adventures of...
Thrilling tales of mild discomfort and general complacence
Saturday, November 01, 2003
Alright...so I was a little pissed when I wrote that last entry. But it...it's just something that I cannot condone.
A creationist science fair. Okay. That's fine. Your beliefs are yours and yours alone, so something like this I have no right to criticize you for. What I can criticize is this:
'2nd Place: "Women Were Designed For Homemaking"'
....Shoot the judges, shoot the parents, send the kid to a real school.....
First of all, fuck them. I don't think that my female "low center of gravity" means that I was designed to carry groceries and laundry baskets. Nor does my ability to give birth mean that that is all I should do with my life. And contrary to this sudent's findings I AM A HARD WORKER. I work my ass off in school and the reason that women are given lower wages is because PRICKS like that kid's future self think that women shouldn't be in that job and should be home making babies and cooking a nice hot meal for their man so they want to discourage them with lower wages. I hope that this boy someday looks back on this "science" fair and at least feels a bit embarrassed. From what I can tell, this kid (of 7th grade) has been homeschooled and from there I get the notion that this boys parents are perpetuating everything that is wrong with modern gender relationships. God...the bile in my throat is rising rising rising...
One exhibit that won honorable mention asked where rocks come from if they can't evolve....
THE FUCKING GROUND YOU MORONIC LITTLE TWIT!!! SUE YOUR PARENTS!! THEY'RE LYING TO YOU!!! If you can't figure out that the EARTH is made out of motherfucking STONE and that that's where ROCKS come from by the time you are of middle school age, you should see a fucking social worker.
.....Elementary School level first prize.....
"1st Place: "My Uncle Is A Man Named Steve (Not A Monkey)"
Cassidy Turnbull (grade 5) presented her uncle, Steve. She also showed photographs of monkeys and invited fairgoers to note the differences between her uncle and the monkeys. She tried to feed her uncle bananas, but he declined to eat them. Cassidy has conclusively shown that her uncle is no monkey." [emphasis added]
Monkeys in the wild do not eat bananas all the time. They eat what they find and bananas are not always available. Her uncle not liking bananas is NOT conclusive scientific evidence. By the same logic you could offer an ape a banana and he may refuse...does that make him a human. I know she's young but what the fuck...
In closing a quick trip to a 6th grade science class can show these kids that they did not really follow scientific procedure. Don't call it science when it's really an exercise in religion. Be honest about what you're belief is and, if you are a creationist, be happy with knowing what you believe. You don't need science if you believe in an infinitely powerful God. Stop putting Him in a tiny box and dictating what He is capable of. Be a creationist, but don't bring science in to it. All it does is discredit the belief system.
~Liz
P.S - All of the first place winners at the Creation Science Fair were females. Expect their would-be scientific minds to be crushed and their hopes for bettering humanity through research dashed in the coming years by restrictions on pursuit of higher learning and early marriage/motherhood.
