I would like to discuss snow and shoes.

You can really tell when a house is a home by looking at the front doorway on a snowy day and seeing if there are shoes there to dry.

I go over to Galloway house a whole bunch, and they really live as a house. The rooms are just rooms where they sleep and do work. The kitchen is used to eat meals in. People watch TV together in the lounge. But it wasn't really until yesterday when I really realized how homey campus housing could be.

It was after the post-exec Bison dinner. I needed to go back to Galloway to pick up the little notebook I never go anywhere without (it went with me to the meeting, but I didn't want to mess up the leather cover in the snow as we walked to dinner). When we got in the front door, I saw that everyone in the house had left their shoes at the door to dry.

Now that makes sense. Who wants to get the carpet in their room all wet and gross? But...I can't really describe it. Everyone not only trusted their housemates enough that they didn't feel like their boots would be stolen, but there was just something so un-dorm-like about it that it made me notice. It also looked like a few of them had tried to make it a little line of shoes, but that went awry somewhere and it turned in to a happy pile of Jeff's shoe on Emily's on Lina's etc.

I get back to Edwards and the common room is empty. There is a long trail of snow leading up the stairs, but no shoes. I walk over to my room and leave my shoes outside my own door for practicality reasons, but it's not quite the same.
