The New Adventures of...
Thrilling tales of mild discomfort and general complacence

This comic reminded me of a fascinating Geek tendency: The desire to know who would win in a fight.

Pirate vs. Ninja is an old one and a classic example of the phenomena. Now, a sane person would be saying "What? Those two would never fight! Ninja are from feudal Japan, and Pirates are from the European Age of Expansion! Get a life!" Well, I say to you, Spiderman and Batman would never fight, either! But don't tell me you've never wondered who would kick who's ass.

We do this *all the time.* Columns have been devoted to these fantasy battles. I could probably write a regularly updated blog *just* weighing the strengths and weaknesses of both sides of a Dr. Doom vs. The Joker type fight.

Well...I guess it all comes back to the fun of useless trivia. And, as humans, we love to obsess over details. Every detail about a character can be scrutinized during these debates, and that makes it a challenge.

I really can't speak too intelligently as to the origins of this obsession, but I can bet the ____vs. _____ debates will never truly be settled. Especially not Pirate vs. Ninja...

...Personally, my money's on Pirate. "Rum Breath" totally counts as an attack....

I think I've figured out what I want to do about going abroad.

Everyone I've talked to about the experience has called it the time of their life. So I've been kind of grudgingly accepting that I too will be doing something like that. But...There's one problem: All of these people were friendly and easily adaptable to new situations. Me? I'm not. I take a long time to get over the shell shock of being thrown in to a totally new environment. I basically retreat and become a very prickly person. Yeah...I'm not exactly the kind of person who makes friends right off the bat. Getting comfortable with my surroundings is hard. Last time I was in that kind of situation, it was Freshman year, and it took me the first three quarters of that to warm up to any kind of human interaction. I think that if I went overseas on my own for 5 months, it would be a very lonely semester. Plus, I really don't want to be away from my friends for that long. There's so much for me here!

But at the same time, travel abroad is very enriching. And studying at a foreign university sound so fun. And everyone says it's great....

I've figured it out, though.

I'm gonna take a 5 week summer program. I'll be able to stay at school, then. And also get plenty of time with my friends back in Jersey! It sounds perfect! And I know for a fact that there are *tons* of summer programs to choose from! I'm gonna go to the Study Abroad Office on Monday after Italian and get to work on making this happen!

Hmmm...if I have this new-found semester left here, perhaps I can run for office again in C + H....Perhaps even....

...President?

I can't believe it! I almost let the day slip by!

I started this blog one year ago today!

Wow. I'm surprised I stuck with this for over a year. And the funny thing is that my interest hasn't really waned. In fact, it's gotten even stronger. I like writing things down, and this gets that accomplished. It feels kind of like a more coherent version of my little notebook that I carry with me everywhere. In any case, here's looking at another fun year!

Oh yeah. The day's events. Well, I went to all of my classes. IR Theory is going to be a challenge to say the lease. Italian recitation was fun. And International Law is a HUGE class, but we get to do a simulation later in the semester, so that'll be fun. I also got more stuff up in my room, including a pretty thing to decorate my door and a string of little paper lanterns hanging under my loft. It's cute. I'll try to get the picture up soon...once I find the transfer cable for the damned camera. I'm convinced it's lost, but I can't find one for purchase online. I even checked frickin' Amazon! They're like the Wal-Mart of the Web and even *they* didn't have it! I'm convinced my dad has it, but I'll never know for certain without a little espionage.

Uck. Still coughing. Time for a nice sleep. I've earned it after all the swimming I did at the university pool today.

Side Note: Swimming in flippers is kinda hard. They can get very heavy.

I'm off to a good start.

I didn't get up until 10 today, but on a whole, the beginning of my day went as planned. I got my shower in and grabbed a pop-tart on the way out. Italian was *amazing.* The teacher is very cheerful, I can kind of understand what he's saying in Italian (using my powers of Spanish and French) and my old Spanish buddy Michelle is in there too! This is gonna be great!...even if he did assign us a buttload of homework on the first day. I'm also one chapter away from being done with my Goya homework.

In other news...I went to the gym...

Please. Contain your gasps of surprise and alarm.

The fact is, I always feel good after I work out, but I have just this thing about the gym. People go there all the time and they're always frighteningly skinny. I'm....more on the curvy side, to put it gently. On the plus side, it wasn't the temple of degredation to the human spirit I thought it was going to be (stick figures bobbing up and down eternally on the elipticle machines of Hades, forced by some inner compulsion to run forever in place unto death. Think some hidden, tucked away circle of Hell). On the other hand, the place kicked my ass. But I feel pretty good. Bree, Emily and I are gonna try a Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule. Here's hoping I keep it.

What a wonderful day.

Yesterday was pretty good too, despite the perils of moving in. Plus, I got in pretty late, so by the time my stuff was unpacked, there was just enough time to get a bit of dinner before heading over to Ben's Gateway (really nice, apartment style dorm) for a get-together. That was a blast, but I ended up feeling like crap some time around 3:00 in the morning. Great way to start the year, eh?

As for today, I got my wish of making dinner for everyone on the day before class. I made chicken and dumplings, and everyone seemed to like it. People went up for thirds, so it couldn't have been that bad. I liked it too, but I should have put the dumplings in differently. Like, made more, smaller ones so that there would be some left over. Now we basically have chicken soup in a tupperware in the fridge. People were also super helpful with all the chopping and stirring while I was doing other stuff. It was getting really hecktic trying to keep track of the double portions. The rest of the day was cool too. Got my books, and did most of my spanish homework for tomorrow (Side note: I have homework *before* class starts! Sucky! At least it was, perish the thought, kinda cool homework).

Now let's see what lies ahead of me tomorrow. No class until 11, so I should have plenty of time for a shower and nice full breakfast...that is, if I decide not to suck and wake up before 9:30. My first class tomorrow is Italian, and then I'm done until 7:00 when I have my Goya class. This class might actually end up rocking, but I reserve judgement for after the first session.

Hmmm...I suppose I should get one of my room related chores done tonight. I think I'll hook up my printer and print out a schedule.

::cries:: I'm never taking DayQuil *again*!

I'm acting like I'm stoned and really starting to piss myself off! I'm completely useless, while needing to get my shit together for school. Mom was trying to get me focused on finding the clothes I wanted to pack, but I just kept nodding off where I was standing!

The longest time I was able to focus was when I watched the last Witch Hunter Robin disc, and I think I missed about 20 minutes of that. In regards to that, I didn't think the ending was bad at all. And I'd been getting warnings from A since we started the series about how bad the ending was. Well...It was, I'll admit, screaming "THIS IS AN OPEN ENDING! YOU TAKE IT FOR WHAT YOU WANT! OMG WE R CLEVAR!", but I'm okay with those kind of endings. Happily ever after doesn't feel like a total cop-out to me. But it was so blatently open for a sequel that I almost laughed. But hey. I'm glad I saw the series and I really liked it over all.

.....hungry now.

Dear God...DayQuil makes me feel funny. I don't feel achey, and I'm less congested, but my head is floaty. Like, cloud in front of the face floating ten feet off the ground kinda floaty. My fingers feel weird and I can't seem to concentrate. I've got the last disc of Witch Hunter Robin in the player, but here I am writing in my blog.

My finger are also kinda shakey. I can't even tell you how many times I've had to backspace while writing this.

I'm not entirely sure I'm gonna use this again....

Man...what the hell happened to me? I feel like complete crap. I had a back ache yesterday, but now I have an everything ache with special attention to my back. My head also feels like it's wrapped in cotton and I've got a scratchy throat. Damn. And with so few days left before school starts up again, I really want to be spending time with people. I guess I'll just have to suck as company tonight.

And I've got a dentist appointment tomorrow that I can't skip. I've got a gaping hole in one of my back teeth that *really* hurts, so I'm kinda glad it'll be getting fixed. But it's gonna be *damned hard* to get to get up at 9:30. I didn't even make it up until 1:00 today!

One thing that is helping my head is chile powder. I've got these great tortilla chips with lime and chile and they taste really good. The chile kick is nice to bring me back to my senses.

On the plus side, I've gotten a couple levels further in Mario vs. Donkey Kong....stupid fire lakes....

Oh man...I can't concentrate...And I've got a mall day tomorrow with my mom so I can get some freakin' pants. Grah.....I go sleep now....

On a final note, Thomas's makes a toasting bread, and it is very tastey.

Wow. I sure changed a lot of the cosmetic stuff on this today. One change that I'm not a big fan of, though, is this new search bar at the top. I like it's function. I just hate the fact that it makes my layout look a bit awkward. I made a filler graphic at the top just to bump the main images down. Grrrrr...

In any case, I got through Wicked on Thursday. *Really* fun book. Now I'm on to Diary, which has a really different pace then the other two Palahniuk books I've read. Usually he just drops you right in there. I'm about halfway through and just figured out what's going on. So far not as good as Lullaby, but I'm not done yet. There's still a chance for it to impress me. I want to pick up Invisible Monsters, though.

Also, I *really* want to go clothes shopping. I need new clothes, at the very least pants. I only have two functioning pairs of jeans, and I could use a few decent shirts. I should also get a good belt, as one of my pairs of jeans is way too big in the waist. Maybe someone will want to go tomorrow. I'm in the mood to find new clothes, which is pretty rare, so I should capitalize on it before it moves on and I'm stuck with one pair of jeans and a couple of tank-tops in November.

The shore was AWESOME yesterday. Not even almost dieing spoiled the day.

The water was crazy cold, but the waves didn't let me take too long getting in. It was a total blast splashing in the waves with V, Ree, and Jason. Shawn spent a lot of time sunbathing. I did a little bit of that too, and actually got a tan! Well...for me it's tan...And I even did a good deed! I managed to get Ree's glasses back from the under the water and held on to them when I got wrecked by a wave. Woo!

But...I did almost drown. Something caused massive waves to show up. Five in a row. I'm...not a very good swimmer. I don't know how to dive under waves properly, and the ironic part was that Ree had been trying to show me how to. Basically I got knocked down, flipped around, dragged across the bottom, popped back up, took a little breath, got knocked down, flipped around, got back up, DIDN'T breath, got knocked down, yadda yadda yadda...

I was done swimming after that.

Then we went to the arcades down at Seaside, got some hardcore photobooth pictures, played some DDR, and after walking to Bangledesh and back, I got some taffy.

After that and a traffic filled ride back, we went to Kyra's for one last swimming party before she goes back to KU. Bye, Kyra! See you soon!

And now today. I've spent most of the time I've been awake reading. I went to B&N today and used the gift card Aunt Paula and Uncle Bob gave me for my birthday. I got my own copy of Wicked since I gave Kyra hers back last night, and Catch 22, a book I've been meaning to read for awhile. I've decided on a reading list for myself:

Wicked
Diary (another Chuck Palahniuk book)
Catch 22
Me Talk Pretty One Day (Still gotta buy it)

Man...my back is killing me. I'm probably gonna use this as a night off from being social. It's kinda rough to get up...I was going to try and learn a character in Soul Caliber II today, but I think I'll put that off until tomorrow. I don't really want to get up right now.

Music: Yellowcard - Breathing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wow. I never knew how badly dissatisfaction could keep me up at night.
V, Shawn and I have been trying to finish the Witch Hunter Robin series for weeks. I thought we had finally gotten all of the discs last night, but we could only hope we were wrong. In the last episode of the last disc, the main character was in mortal peril and the one person protecting her had taken a judo chop to the head.
And that was it.
I had a mini-heart attack, thinking that that was it for the series. Cliff hanger ending. Viewer is left to decide what happens. We eventually convinced ourselves that we were missing a disc. Yeah. That had to be it.
I didn't get to checking until this morning, but yes, Virginia, there is a sixth disc. My rage can subside.
Now I'd like to talk about Yellowcard.
I finally got around to listening to Ocean Avenue, which I bought over a month ago. I also have One for the Kids. Now...I like Yellowcard...I really do. I just have this love/hate relationship with their CDs. I love the instrumentation. The fiddle works in surprisingly well with their song, and they seem to be very talented guitar players. But on both CDs there seems to be a segment of about three or four songs in a row that I don't enjoy and cause my attention to flag. I have to force myself to listen attentively again, and eventually get rewarded by a series of rather good songs. I can't form a coherent opinion! Curses! It would be a really good CD if not for the low point near the beginning...but then it gets good again...and I like the music...but the lyrics get repetitive....GAHHHH!!!
Despite the fact that I know it really doesn't matter, and no one really cares what I say in them, I enjoy writing reviews.
At the very least so I can look back at an articulated veiw of what I saw, read, used or played. Maybe I'll make a site for it. That might be fun to do...
